Colleagues,
Each year, from now through August, I ask states to report to the
AAACE-NLA list how their state budget for adult literacy education
has fared for the upcoming fiscal year.
According to the FOX News Web site [ http://tinyurl.com/2urx3s ], and
a subsequent e-mail exchange with State ABE Director, Johan Uvin,
Rhode Island -- the country's smallest state -- will get an over $2
million increase in their state funding for adult education for FY08
(Program Year 2007-2008), an astounding 41% increase over the
previous year. Rhode Island, like Massachusetts, California, and
several other states, has shifted its funding mix from federal to
primarily state funding, with almost 7 out of every 10 dollars now
from state funding of some sort.
That's great news. Congratulations to the students, practitioners,
government leaders and policy makers in Rhode Island who made this
happen.
What's the news from YOUR state? State increases? Decreases? Level
funding?
