Colleagues,
The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) in Ireland, having for
several years offered a very successful prime-time TV adult literacy
course, now boldly leads with an innovative TV series that uses
commercial television for adult literacy public awareness, and to
market literacy instruction to potential adult students.
Over eight weekends this fall a group of 10 adult learners will
participate in an intensive basic skills course tailored specifically
for them. From Friday to Sunday the students will stay in a
comfortable location where they will be taught by a team of expert
basic skills teachers. The TV series will follow the students over
the eight weekends, and each week the students will work towards
their own goal that they set at the start of the course. A major aim
of the series is to show the experience of learning to read, or
improve other basic skills, as an adult so that more adults might
enroll in adult basic skills classes. The series should also help the
general public better understand the opportunities and challenges of
neighbors who learn basic skills as adults.
An article about the TV show appears in the Kilkenny (Ireland)
Advertiser.
