A Memorial Day Message:
Adult Literacy Education Across the Centuries and Across the World:
A Schedule of Forthcoming Speaking Engagements
Tom Sticht
International Consultant in Adult Education
On Memorial Day, Monday 28 May, we remember not just those who served in the
armed services as soldiers, airmen, marines, or sailors, but also the
thousands of adult literacy educators, both civilian and military, who
helped the troops acquire the literacy skills needed to perform their
duties and communicate with loved ones back home.
Following is a schedule of my present speaking engagements in which I will
discuss in some venues the history of adult literacy education in the
United States, including a recounting of the stories of some of the great
adult literacy educators who helped our fighting forces of poorly literate
or non-English speaking learn to read and write. In other venues I will
discuss the status of adult literacy education in six industrialized
nations: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the
United States.
I enjoyed meeting colleagues from the aaace-nla and other discussion lists
following my presentation at the COABE meeting in Philadelphia this year
and I look forward to meeting others at these upcoming presentations.
