[AAACE-NLA] immigration bipartisan bill introduced in Congress

Thanks Heide,

Don't know if it's accurate, but I thought I heard on one of the cable
news reports that current illegal immigrants would be given provisional
amnesty status subject to their filling out the requirements as you
listed below.

Perhaps we'll get some clarity on this bi-partisan legislation which, if
it does pass, Bush is likely to sign.

If so, could be interesting how that gets played out in the 2008
Republican presidential nomination and congressional races.

Perhaps there's a backlash against the backlash taking place.

Hi, all

I imagine that most of you have heard that today a bipartisan bill on
immigration reform was introduced.

The bill includes

* a point system that balances immigration of low skilled
workers, high skilled workers, and refugees and amnesty seekers

* "earned" legalization (including a $ 5000 penalty, leaving the
country to apply for a visa, and taking an English test)

* A program to secure the border

* the Dream Act (to address issues of undocumented youth who have
finished US high school - a legal right- but who remain undocumented
with an uncertain future).

*        employer sanctions

*        a temporary worker program

* probationary documents that would allow for four year temporary
visas (to be extended once) and then apply for green cards after 8 years
- and five years later for citizenship

Expect to see analyses of the proposed bill soon
