OK, Thoreau--I was reminded by a writer that  Thoreau did NOT criticize  
the military, he was not a pacifist,  He still had "drummer" and march"  
in his metaphor.  He also supported John Brown even AFTER Brown and his  
sons  murdered people in Missouri.

And do you suppose "pacifist" means "peaceful fist?"  Maybe not.
