As individuals, we can share our views with friends. As representatives of
agencies, we can inform others of ongoing situations and to some extent
candidates¹ support or lack of support for various funding/legislation.
You¹re right, JoAnn we do need to be careful. As long as we communicate
as individuals, we do have broad freedom of speech. As representatives, we
need to frame our communication as the sharing of information.

Hi Art,

This is certainly an activity individuals can carry out. However, they must
not represent a non-profit for which they work since non-profits may not
support individual candidates.

How careful we must be!

JoAnn

The communication below was sent to the National Council of State Directors
of Adult Education Single Point of Contact Network.

A Different Call To Action

Over the past two years we have been working with members of Congress who
were already in place when we started our campaigns for addition resources
for adult education. The next four weeks are critical to the future
composition of the US House and Senate. This will be a watershed election in
terms of the issues facing our country.

The time has come for us as adult educators to fulfill our responsibilities
to our students, our families and ourselves by publicly declaring our
support for the candidates of our choice and actively working for their
election. Each of us should contact the campaign headquarters of our chosen
candidate and volunteer to make telephone calls, or drop literature or stand
on a street corner with a sign.

At the very least each of us should be mailing at least 25 postcards to a
combination of our friends, co-workers, and family members stating ³On
November 7 I will be voting for ŠŠŠŠbecause ŠŠŠŠ. Please join me in
supporting ŠŠ.. on Nov. 7².

Any of the actions above will make public the private decision that you will
carry out in the voting booth. Based upon the importance of this election it
is time for all of us to take the next steps. Art Ellison
