AACE-NLA Colleagues:

Are we still interested in advocating for legislative action supporting
adult literacy education?

ProLiteracy America has posted an advisory to its affected affiliates urging
them to contact their Representatives on the House Appropriations
Subcommittee responsible for funding adult education to assure at least level funding
in the FY 07 budget.

Subcommittee members are: (Republicans) Chair, Ralph Regula - OH; Ernest
Istook - OK; Roger Wicker - MS; Ann Northrup - KY; Kay Granger - TX; John
Peterson - PA; Don Sherwood - PA; Dave Weldon - FL; James Welsh - NY; (Democrats)
David Obey - WI; Steny Hoyer - MD; Rosa De Laura - CT; Jessie  Jackson - IL;
Patrick Kennedy - RI; Lucille Roybal-Allard - CA.

The subcommittee is scheduled to markup the FY 07 appropriations bill on
June 7, 2006. The advisory also states that Chairman congressman Regula is in
receipt of a dear Colleague letter signed by 43 House members urging at least
level funding for adult basic education and literacy in the FY 07 budget.
Proliteracy's message cites the NAAL - 2003 findings of 30 million adult in the
Below Basic category and the 60 million in the basic category, who need help
and the fact that all the current combined funding allows only three million
adults to receive remedial help probably to use to justify our request.

Don't know if this is appropriate for the list. I remember several dear
colleague alerts posted some time ago, but I've received a number of these
alerts from ProLiteracy that haven't been posted on this list. I didn't send them
because by the time I got to read them, I thought it was too late to do any
good.

This list looks an excellent vehicle for spreading the word to more
colleagues in the adult basic education and literacy to boost the numbers that are
letting our legislators know what we feel is important.

Proliteracy America seems to be doing a great job of keeping affiliates
aware of current advocacy needs. I'd be glad to try and pass them to the list if
that's what's wanted and no one else can do it. Is it permissible to
forward the advisory message and attach the dear colleague letters that show who
has signed on to them?
