Presidential Question:

Given the importance of adult literacy education and its impact on the
workforce, what role should the federal government play in ensuring

I would edit Maureen's comment to include adults of
any age who were left behind by the traditional
education system. We are seeing many middle aged
folks who are losing their jobs due to downsizing or
employers moving from the area who have skill levels
similar to those she mentioned.

Ok, here is one......

It is understandable that you have had much to prepare for the next
election and your campaign .With all the important news today and the war we
are involved in,it is inevitable that many important topics will get
pushed aside in favor of those that constantly seem to make the headlines.

One of the important topics that unfortunately is not in the public eye as
much as it should be, is an extremely important area of Adult Education.
Lack of sufficient funding for educating our adult population, as shown from
research, has serious consequences on their own children, who should be
,after all, the future leaders of this nation. Have you had the
opportunity to educate youself on this topic? If not would you consider
looking into this area?

If you are knowledgeable on this important but neglected subject, what are
you thoughts concerning the dismal effect the considerable funding cuts have
had on our inability to provide enough programs (which include educating a
huge immigrant population) to help this population take their place in
society, as contributing members, who understand their rights as citizens,
who have an understanding of our proud cultural heritage and who
would able to participate in our Democratic process, with the right
education, but can't? This lack of education only perpetuates much of the
illiteracy and poverty that lies among us.
Your thoughts please??

Can we afford to ignore adult education while errors in safety and health
are made from lack of English speaking, reading and writing skills?

Why are mandates created for reporting and program directions without
funding for those mandates?

AAACE-NLA Colleagues,

Take a moment now, please, to think about what the most important
adult literacy education questions are to ask the candidates for U.S.
President in 2008. It may seem early, but it's not. Candidates are
already appearing in New New Hampshire. If we get in on the ground
floor we may be able to persuade candidates to include adult literacy
in their campaign platforms.

So far we have received only one question. That's a pathetic
response. No, worse: apathetic.

Now is not the time for apathy. It's the time for action. We must
build upon our victory of last year with Congress, push for
additional funding for next year, and get a President who champions
adult literacy.

So, what should we ask? It's up to you.

Those who are busy: it doesn't take much time to post one question.
Think about your questions in your car, on the bus, in the shower.
Post them later today or tomorrow.

Those who beat the drum here about democracy, I have not heard from
you yet. Practice, please, what you preach. Engage in the democratic
process here. Don't complain about summit elitism, or economy-driven
adult literacy policy, and then fail to participate in a democratic
action process. What do _you_ think we should be asking candidates?

Those who hesitate to speak up, now is the time. Post one simple
question.

Those who believe that students should participate in this process,
ask them what they think our field should be asking presidential
candidates, then have them post (or post for them) their questions to
this list.

Those who have questions. but don't want to post them publicly, send
them directly to me at djrosen at theworld.com

Thanks in advance to those who post this week.

Colleagues--

I have been asked by the group I work for to come up with some ideas
that if funded (modestly) would increase adult literacy.

I would like to give the group some answers from the field--that's you.
There are absolutely no guarantees that any grants would be funded,
but the request is there.

So please tell me, on this list or write to me personally
(andreawilder at comcast.net) about any ideas you have. I am thinking of
the ideas as potential plugs for adult literacy holes, rather than as
an overhaul, in part because the field is linked up now, from state to
state.

Grant ideas could come in many forms, from research information, to
teaching teachers,. to gathering info on the economic returns on
investment, to simple but powerful study designs, to a conference that
would unite different providers around a single topic. We should be
able to build on that.

Again, there is no guarantee that the grants will lead to action, but
the request has been made. I will be away for a couple of days so
won't be able to answer questions. A couple of people getting
together over one topic sounds fine to me--think synergy, or even a
list of priorities that many agree on would be helpful. Please include
reasons for your suggestions.

I am thinking of next Friday, March 17, as a deadline for ideas from
this list serv. i will post this on the NIFL list servs, also, when I
return.

The GOAL, or better yet, the PURPOSE towards which we are all heading
has seemed a bit amorphous to me--that is, there are a variety of ways
to think about the PURPOSE of our efforts.. I think you should include
that. Any practical hole-plugging ideas that can be implemented seem
best to me. Goal and purpose are different--a GOAL is like a stepping
stone on the way to a larger PURPOSE..

I hope I haven't been too long-winded on this request.

Thanks very much.

Andrea
