As long as there remains the gap between rich and poor--those with a lot more 
money and those with   a lot less money--there will be a need for adult 
literacy.   The problems in some homes are simply too severe.

A colleague of mine, with a newly minted M.Ed as a reading specialist and 
some years of teaching already, is taking on a first grade.   She has 13 kids to 
teach, they are at grade level--she is very committed, very smart--how many 
are like that?   Kids she teaches often sleep on the floor, don't have   enough 
food at home, have multiple sibs from multiple fathers, cockroaches in 
backpacks, etc.
