Hello Andrea:
"Asia" is a geographical area, like Mexico or the United States, or Japan, where many people are born and emmigrate from. "Jewish" can be ethnicity, history, and-or a conscious appropriation of a highly varied religious tradition.

Janet,
So it's a stereotype, but also a stereotype with some truth in it, I don't know how much. For my Japanese teacher of Japanese, it is an obvious fact. She also has little regard for Asian parents who DON'T push their children to achieve. More common, in her view, are Asian parents who say essentially, "You are not going to have to live like I do, so go to school and get good grades."
It's a stereotype also reflected in Harvard and MIT admissions, walk around these areas and you see many Asian students, like there used to be many Jewish students.
Last night in my kitchen we talked about Jewish students, and how they are "overrepresented" in professional positions. Again, I think, the immmigants' drive and holding education in high esteem is reflected here. Also, if you have any knowledge of how even somewhat observant Jews study Torah, this would be clear. It's study habits and Jewish pushing.
A problem for the Jewish community is marrying out--thus the communal habits of studying and pushing may become diluted.
I have no studies on this, I am going by book reviews and my observations and now first-hand knowledge. Various academic honors, certifications, etc. always seem to be announced in the minyan, and everybody is pleased, both for the individual and for the minyan. Is my minyan representative of other minyans? Don't know.
The born-Jews that I know take a deep interest in Jews who make the newspapers--like Abramoff, or Feuerstein. The first one is a skunk, the second one is admired for "doing the right thing" by continuing workers salaries when his factory in MA burned down.
I will continue the conversation with my Japanese teacher of Japanese.....
Andrea
