Ok, I need to add some information. In the Purcell-Gates study, the
moms' education level varied, but it was the mom who used literacy
[reading and writing] that affected the child's emerging literacy
skills. So if a mom was going to community college, but did all her
studying after the kids went to bed, her children were not so
interested in literacy skills. But, even if a mom did not have a
high school diploma, if she used literacy for a purpose--even if it
was just reading the TV Guide and writing grocery lists--then the
children had higher emerging literacy skills and interest.
