Tanya,
Parental pressure plus high educational expectations from this particular
community explains why Asian children do well in school. There is also the
factor of shame--children don't want to bring shame to their parents.
These are my conclusions after having read a lot about this group; I also
have living in my home this year a Japanese teacher of Japanese--JSL you might
say. We were talking about this issue last night, as one of her graduate
students is not doing so well. "How could he do this to his parents?" came
spontaneously to her lips after I suggested that the student might just fold up his
tent (metaphorically speaking) and go home rather than take a final exam.
Andrea
Admittedly this is anecdotal, so I would love to hear what others think,
particularly Asian list serv members.
