Well, Sarah, this makes sense.   A person naturally applies what they learned 
in school to the chores of daily life, and the home is the matrix for that.   
Hence, the correlation of mother's ed with child's ed.

The clasisc book for this is "Family Literacy," by Denny Taylor, 1983, 
Heinemann.
