There is a white paper 1999 National Literacy Forum called Adult and
Family Literacy in the United States: Key Issues for the 21st Century.
It makes the claim that (I quote):

"Children's chance for success in school is greately affected by the
educational attainment of their parents. A parent's educational level
is the single best indicator of a child's success in school"

Also, Tom Stitch referred to a report from the National Center for
Educational Statistics in a recent message. I am quoting Tom:

"A finding of considerable significance in the NCES long term trends
report is that, from 1980 to 2004, for 13 and 17 year olds, reading
achievement increases as their parent?s amount of education increases.
But the
reading achievement for students whose parents had less than high
school education have not improved over the last quarter century, nor
have the scores for students whose parents have more education."

Tom has also recently reported that based on NCES data there has not
been improvement in overall reading achievemnt of children with all the
"No Child Left Behind" BS. He did not say "BS" though ;-)
Hope that this helps,

Andres

 To the List;

Can anyone help me with locating the specific study or studies that
link the educational level of children to the educational level of the
mother? We need the specific citation for an advocacy campaign around
TANF issues that we are putting together here in New Hampshire. Thanks,
Art Ellison
