The author's name is Arlie Woodrum, he teaches at the University of Ohio,
Athens. He grew up in Virginia, has been a teacher and a school head, now
highly respected faculty member.
We share the same bias, namely that you can't understand schools unless you
understand families, can't understand families unless you understand the
regional economic forces that drive them. Large academic studies will give
you valid information, BUT if you want to know what to do with that info
you really have to do some homework on local conditions--families, regions,
and so on.
