Teachers:
If I get Avian Flu I am a dead duck, you might say, as I have a chronic
autoimmune disease. So I have a dog in this fight.
I called up and left messages at 5 city official's' offices yesterday, asking
about their plans in case of a pandemic. One called back, pretty good. She
said she had just gotten back from vacation, etc, so didn't have a response
right then. (Hey, I was nice.) She said she was sure that state and federal
officials were doing planning. I reminded her about Katrina..... Anyway,
you catch my drift. Today I will call a city councilor. She has thrown her
hat into the ring for state senate, so this is a great opportunity for her and
the community.
A good possibility for a class lesson on telephone speaking (EFF) and letter
writing, I should imagine.
Really, a great idea if adult literacy students ALL OVER THE COUNTRY got busy
doing this!! Advocacy, anyone? Our own home-grown public health/adult
literacy movement.
Andrea
