[AAACE-NLA] U.S. Secretary of Education Announces Plans to Increase Adult Ed Efforts ?

This is very interesting and also disturbing. We have been
discussing the technical meaning of NAAL. Ultimately, however, the
political meaning of NAAL will be more important than the "technical
meaning" because the political meaning that emerges will guide policy
makers' actions. Although the political meaning of NAAL will be
shaped by many factors, what those who have power and access to the
press want NAAL to mean has inordinate influence. So far it seems
that although NAAL has identified a problem, the "spin" is that it's
a higher education problem and, according to the press release below,
a K-12 problem. Adult literacy education is being left out of the
equation. The notion that NAAL will be a significant force in
positively influencing adult literacy has been eroded and will
probably continue to be eroded if the Administration has its way.
