It does seem that very little emphasis is placed on the joy that education can bring. Maybe we should think about that more seriously. True education can be life changing and can bring joy to our lives. There seems to be a message out there that becoming educated is something we have to do in order to survive in the world. Maybe more focus should be put on how great a good education can be and what it can bring into our lives.

It's not just the spending, but the direction of
spending, that harms US companies, Eisen said. Too
much of that money is directed toward private groups,
such as churches, rather than the companies, where
workers with low literacy rates could make best use of
it, she said.
``It is expensive for manufacturers to do this on
their own but they do it,'' Eisen said.
David,
I am somewhat confused by that last statement. What
do you suppose they mean exactly? Do they mean that
companies train their own people in Literacy? If so
how are they doing this and how wide spread is this
among the companies? Do you have any idea?

Edith Hamilton:
It has always seemed strange to me that in our endless discussions about
education so little stress is laid on the pleasure of becoming an educated
person, the enormous interest it adds to life. To be able to be caught up into
the world of thought -- that is to be educated.

AAACE-NLA Colleagues,
Since the National Institute for Literacy is keeping track of media
responses to the NAAL results on its News Flashes page, there is no
need for me to continue to do this. If the media response is of
interest, please go to:

Two discussions in the media of the NAAL results:
1) There is a brief article in Education Week Online (www.edweek.org)
2) Today at 9 AM P.S.T. there will be a discussion of adult literacy on
KQED (public radio in San Francisco). You can listen live over the
internet, and the program should be available in podcast form sometime
after the fact.
