I was told by my supervisor that providing a scribe would not be possible.  But, I am still looking for some way to help this man.  I was just advised to check the 1990 Disabilities Act, so that is my next step.  Thanks.  Linda

You should check  to see if special accomodations for his limitations would be 
possible.  That is can he take the GED test orally?  We had a student who had 
Muscular Dystrophy, and she was going to have a scribe because she could not use 
her hands.

  I have a student in his fifties who is wanting very badly to get his GED.  
However, he has gotten a late start - plus has many obstacles to overcome.  He 
has dyslexia and had a head injury which effects his memory somewhat.  He does 
great on his tests if it is given orally, but when he has to read the questions, 
etc. he doesn't do so well.  He is progressing nicely in math and seems to do 
much better with numbers than letters.  If any of you have any ideas as to how 
to help this man and give hime the hope, I feel he deserves, please let me know.

I wonder if any of you could lead me to any good studies that show a 
cost-benefit analysis of AEL or GED or ESL for adults.  Of course, I am 
especially interested to see any studies that do show a benefit.  I am 
currently taking a Microeconomics of Education class and all the 
made-up samples of the cost-benefit of AEL or GED show these programs 
not to be cost effective.  But I am wondering what real data is out 
there.

Yvonne, do you mean opportunity cost (money spent or not earned while you're 
taking the course) vs the increased income afterwards as a result of increased 
income because of higher educational level?
That's what we're supposed to think (if we are rational economic actors) about 
when we choose, as individuals, whether to attend school or not.
John Tyler has studied the economic impact of the GED on individuals and much of 

his work can be found on the ncsall web site, http://www.ncsall.net/?id=652#tyler
A recent study of the economic impact of the GED on ex-offenders, raised many 
questions: http://www.ncsall.net/index.php?id=822
His work doesn't look at the opportunity costs, however.

Or do you mean a more societal look: the cost to society of providing a program 
and the resultant benefit to society in terms of less dependence on social 
programs, etc., by the attendees?
I'm not familiar with these; can you share information on any of them you have 
reviewed?
