Tanya:
The Dudley Seers article can probably be found somewhere on the web. I did
a quick look, didn't get to it.
I can't remember when Maslow wrote on the needs hierarchy.
However, Seers starts with food and subsistence living. (1972)
For the fulfillment of human potential Seers includes: "adequate
educational levels (especially literacy), participation in government, belonging to a
nation that is truly independent, both economically and politically..." and so
on.
Remember, the sixties were a time when there were calls for nationhood in
Black Africa, and there were links with African-Americans in this country.
Beside the chaos of the Vietnam War, there was a sense of hope for Africa; Seers
was writing in that context.
All the features we normally include in our discussions he included in his
short paper.
Because our national life and the life outside our borders more and more is
like the latest Harry Potter novel, his work will no doubt seem dated to some,
as will the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
Anybody with half a brain knows that nationally and internationally we are in
crisis, today.
For anybody who is still with me on this post--we need to create the links
between the nodes that Seers mentions, that Andres believes are essential, that
any thinking and caring person also believes are essential, so we can apply
pressure at the correct points.
Andrea
