You really toss 'em out here for us to think!

It seems to me that you are diagnosing "work avoidance" in your students.  It's kind of like teachers "teaching to the contract" when anyone knows  teachers work overtime.

Do your students know the goals?  Figure them out for yourself. Tell them your goals.  You've got a vision, and  to achieve it your students, and you, must realize certain goals. There's a space between  where you are now and what you want them to achieve in another year.  Work collaboratively.  Meet periodically with your students to assess progress.  Make it a whole group effort. Have students help one another, create a visual organizer that shows progress towards goals

I might ask your students what techniques work best in learning, and use more of these techniques. Maybe you are avoiding doing this, yourself.

Quite a challenge...
