In Pennsylvania, the Governor's office has included literacy among the issues it is addressing with our DC congressional delegation. Also, state legislators have heard enough about the issue that they are requesting information on the impact of the proposed federal cuts on PA's adult education services.

Subject: [AAACE-NLA] Campaign Update: 29 States Active: 21 Silent

AAACE-NLA Colleagues,

The Save Adult Literacy Education Campaign has picked up steam, with
activity reported in nearly 60% of the states, and evidence of some
activity in several other states. Art Ellison has reported that we
have already had some success, that our calls, faxes and letters have
helped to prevent the WIA Plus amendment from getting into the WIA
Reauthorization bill, HR 27. But, of course, this is only the
beginning.

We look forward to hearing from the 21 states which have not reported
yet. If you are from a silent states, please find out what's
happening, and post an update to the list -- or if you prefer, to me,
to post to the list.

What
is happening now? Are faxes and letters being sent? Are phone calls
being made? Are these being reported? (This is very important so we all
know what the level of activity is -- and where more effort needs to be
made.)
We can only be effective if we are organized and committed.
