In re David's announcement:

At the risk of insulting my virtual colleagues on the list serv in these really difficult days, I feel it important to refer to the shadow that darkens Jefferson's achievements, and that shadow is slavery.  To quote Fawn Brodie (1974) in her biogrraphy of Jefferson:  "Only his conflict over the just treatment of black people in his life, whose voices, certainly articulate at the time but silent to us in the documents that have come down to us, remained unresolved, troubling, and corrosive." (p. 470)
