Tom, anyone else,
What I think is happening here is the shift of tax burden from federal areas to states, and it is happening in other areas--fishing regulations, policing/drug prevention, housing, medicaid are examples. So the tax burden shifts accordingly, too, to the states. But some items, like financing basic research in science, are usually done by the federal government (I'm thinking of California, here) so we lose all the way around. Locally, taxes will rise, they have to.
What worries me most is the drain of jobs overseas, China and India. Last year there was a lot of talk on radio, newspapers, about the US as a new empire. That talk has vanished, now it's China, which is sucking resources away, that we have developed here--both people and "natural" resources, scrap metal, and machine parts.
There is no economic national policy in place to prevent us from becoming a province of China. Intellectual property that we have developed is being sucked overseas.
Because our resources are being spent elsewhere we are bleeding ourselves dry when we should be shoring up our economic defenses here at home.
Andrea
