Texas is in full swing contacting our elected officials regarding the proposed '06 cut in Adult Education funding.
Our 56 member Adult Education Directors' Council organized a network which is contacting appropriate members of Congress via phone calls, FAX, letters and email. Our Council members are in the process of contacting all Adult Education personnel, students and community advocates who vigorously oppose the recommendation for any reduction in Adult Education funding.

Texas Council of Adult Education Directors

Subject: [BULK] - [AAACE-NLA] Campaign to Save Adult Literacy Education
AAACE-NLA Colleagues,
On February 6th, "Run Spot Run" reported on this list:
"I hope this is not true, but I have heard that the Bush budget proposal
that will be released tomorrow will propose to cut funding for the adult
education program approximately in half. Even Start, as before, would be
eliminated."
It is true. The administration has proposed FY06 budget cuts that are
approximately 2/3 of the ABE state grant allocation, and all of Even
Start.
On February 7th, the Policy Committee of the National Council of State
Directors of Adult Education launched what I call the Campaign to Save
Adult Literacy Education. A letter was sent to (at least one) State Point
of Contact (SPOC) in every state, the person who has agreed to be
responsible for activating -- or in some states where none exists,
creating -- a state network of response.
Today is February 15th, over a week later. In some states, this is
happening, and practitioners, adult learners, volunteers, business and
labor and other stakeholders in adult education are writing hundreds of
faxes and letters, and making phone calls to their Congresspeople. But I
have heard that in other states no one has heard a word. Those states are
not stepping up, and not lifting their share of the load; if you are in
one of those state, please work to change that.
If you need to know who your State Point of Contact (SPOC) is, e-mail me.
I may also have the contacts of others in your state who may be active.
Maybe your state _is_ active, but you just aren't plugged in yet. Now is
the time. But maybe your state is moving too slowly and needs your
encouragement and help.
Please let us all know what is happening in your state. Post to this list
or e-mail me. What are the campaign activities planned in your state? What
is happening now? Are faxes and letters being sent? Are phone calls
being made? Are these being reported? (This is very important so we all
know what the level of activity is -- and where more effort needs to be
made.) We can only be effective if we are organized and committed.
