All I can say is...research, it's the nature of the beast. "Books aren't meant to be believed but analyzed." Don't know who wrote it but the quote seems to apply here.
The "fluency" concept is being mined extensively by LD researchers, neuroscientists.
The "phonemic awareness" concept has also been thoroughly worked over by linguists.
I don't know if the "44 phonemes in English" came up in the NRP, but anyone who thinks for 1/2 second knows that is incorrect.
Myself, I am glad to have the 5 concepts written down because it gives a starting point for analysis, and this is useful. Unfortunately, these five have as you say become a canon, and now a fad, written into reading programs.
