[AAACE-NLA] Legislation to Strengthen & Improve America's JobTraining System

Most of us know the press release posted here by dmartin and put out by the House Committee is propaganda for the destruction of Adult Education as we know it (end of the WIA, by not renewing it) and instead new legislation that narrows what we do to teaching alphabetics and job skills training. The Committee has wasted no time coming out of the winter recess to begin this battle again.

The entire thing is based on the very Misunderstandings about reading that Tom Sticht has annotated. It is the culmination of the welfare-to-work mindset and we must resist it, though I doubt we can defeat it.

I await instruction from our lobbying leadership of how to fight this.

In the spring, I spent many hours comparing the 1998 WIA with the new "version" passed by the House. I prepared a long report with my findings. I would like to add that information here, but in the process of creating this post I accidentally erased the file! I did not originally post it on this list, so the archives can't help me. If by chance anyone remembers something about "WIA vs. WRA" and you still have it in your computer, please email me off list pronto. It would have showed up sometime in March or April.

For the Cause! Debbie
