[AAACE-NLA] Misunderstandings About Reading

With his usual succinctness and clarity, Tom Sticht has summarized in one
short post an entire semester course in the Teaching of Reading. With his
permission (email me, Tom, if you object) I intend to copy his post,
verbatim, into my annual report.
Many years ago Madeleine Hunter espoused the development of a common
definition of terms for the teaching/learning process. So much in education
is imprecise because of so many different meanings assigned to words like
"review", "know" or even "teach". I just wish her definitions were more
widely understood and used. (Her term "anticipatory set", for example, has
stayed with me for all these years and I never approach a lesson without
this beginning.
Perhaps it is time to promulgate a definition of terms specific to adult
education, including those that Tom listed in his post. Professional
developers among us, this is your task.
