Interactive software is a great gift. I am giving a $29.95 (single user)
piece of software that allows anyone (even lower level literacy adults and
their children) to develop a short book and print it off a computer. It is
elementary level easy, but fits so many uses. A company trainer could take
digital pictures of a process and detail its completion. I'm thinking of
doing one on fractions. A child could write their own picture book and
publish it. A mom (with high or low skills) could make a book or scrap book
for their child. (I am using it for this purpose--A Year in the Life of
Jamie.) I am in no way connected with this product except that I have had
so much fun with it and can see its potential as a fun learning activity.
For Christmas, all our teachers are getting licenses for the computers in
their centers. The best thing is its cost. Unbelievable at $195 for 10
licenses! You can get a free trial at

OK, advocates--
For holiday gift giving--what are some suggestions you have for giving
literacy? I can think of the obvious, like books (child and adult) magazine
subscriptions (child and adult) newspaper subscriptions; what else is
anybody doing? Brilliant and creative ideas?
Thanks.
Andrea
