One of my more overwhelming Christmas projects
involved creating books of each student's personal
writings. I was using language experience to teach 15
ABE students. They wrote a story each week for 3
months, I thought it would be nice for them see
themnselves as authors with their work in print and
bound, with the title and their name on the spine. I
thought we could put the "publications" on the shelf,
and they could read each other's work.

Our program had very little money, so, the cost was
mine to bear. After a visit to Kinko's I realized my
original idea had to be modified. I used 3-holed,
magnetic picture holders into which I inserted their
stories. The books acutally looked great! I was so
pleased and so excited to present them to the class.

Oddly, when I distributed the books, the students did
not recognize the writing as their own. I had to bring
their original stories the next class meeting. They
held their originals next to the printed page and were
silently AMAZED! They wanted to take the books home
and show their families. It was a very emotional event
... even now!

After Christmas, we added a description of the
publication and their bio - just as they see a
publication in the bookstore.
It was a lot of work, but worth every effort. It was
truly transformational.
