[AAACE-NLA] Advocacy and the CBO [faked-from]

Exactly, THE question. However, assessments for dyslexia by qualified
doctors are too expensive for most of our students, and the training for
instructional staff in specific skills to assist a dyslexic person in
learning is insufficient (to be kind). As our population ages and remains
in a rapidly changing workforce longer, this is truly a professional as well
as a societal issue which demands increased advocacy.

True Charlene, but I wonder how many of those adult learners found out about
"Dyslexia? I doubt seriously that they each went to the DSM-IV and looked up
the criteria for dyslexia and then assigned it to themselves. Is a student
issue or is it a professional issue.?

Actually, the word dyslexia is far too over used by many adult learners as a
rationale for their not being able to read well.

Laurel,
Thanks for writing. I briefly checked out the web site, maybe too briefly.
The number reported there would result in 20% of students who are dyslexic.
I think that number is way off, much too high. This doesn't mean that lots
of people have reading problems, they obviously do, but probably not from
how neural systems are laid down in the brain.
One of the difficulties here is that "dyslexia" is tossed around in too
elastic a way, kidn of like a scare word.
Andrea
