Tom--Thanks so much for your detailed reply, this is very helpful for my work.

Next to my desk is a library volume of your  "Reading  for Working."  

(Also next to my desk is a small sewn cloth book, "My Indestructible ABC book."  edited by "Uncle Herbert" in 1879, for J.B. Lippincott & Co.)

She called each person up to the table to read lines from the form;  then she asked them each to write their name in cursive.  That's how she found out where they were in reading and writing."
