Whoops!  Tom, you're right,

I had completely forgotten the range of issue that children come to school with that may affect school performance, poverty, frequent moves, medical conditions, being among them.  For one population, recent research estimated this accounted for 2/3 of the variance in reading achievement--a social class problem confounded by racial bias.
