I think you answered your own question--these methods probably weren't used when adult learners were in school,or weren't used long enough to be successful, something like that.

I have used updated O-G, Wilson:  you have to be consistent and systematic and able to take on the students' emotional issues as you plow ahead. They work and they take time.
