[AAACE-NLA] GED test in Spanish [faked-from]

Barbara and others, I am curious,  what are the benefits  to the student of acquiring a GED in Spanish?  Are they actually learning America History in Spanish? I am assuming that  the  GED exam is given in Spanish as well?

In New Mexico we learned this year that the WIA Title II funds cannot be used to teach GED in Spanish. We can use our state funds, however. Currently a group of people is meeting to determine how best to assess this group. Also, in NM the GED official test battery includes a sixth test in English proficiency. So the group is also studying this aspect and how it impacts the GED in Spanish offerings. We cannot count the GED in Spanish students for NRS purposes. We are coming up with a statewide policy for other than NRS reporting.

Federal Funds can go to teaching Spanish GED if the grant is in form of a High School Equivalency Program (HEP) for Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers. I don't know if there are any other out there.

One thing that you would need to look out for when combining a Spanish GED class with an ESL class is whether you have other nationalities in the ESL class. They will flee. That has happened in our classes when we had a couple of Spanish speaking instructors who often lapsed into Spanish.
The other thing is that I have been told that federal funds cannot fund Spanish GED classes. It is to be used to teach English. I am not sure where your funding comes from, so this may not be a problem.
