To the same point, what is Pro-Literacy's relationship with WalMart?

Hi Robert and everyone,

I just posted a reply about Wal-Mart, and after reading your post
Robert, I have to say that I am very suspicious of Wal-Mart's survey as
well - for all the reasons that I stated in a previous post. I would
need to have many questions answered about how that survey was
developed, how participants were selected, how it was administered, how
results were interpreted and reported out..Robert says that he doesn't
know of a better data collecting organization - hmmm..didn't realize
that they were also in that business. But maybe I should have guessed
that they were, given the way they control their environment and
everyone in it so tightly.

So I still maintain then, that we should be contacting them to inquire
about all this. If the survey ends up being helpful, great. If they
are aligned with the idea that everyone can, and has the right to
advance to their full potential, then great, we have another ally. But
we should find that out.

I'm glad this was of some value to you Tanya ,but I want to emphasize
that my main point in posting this was not to publicize the hotline,
although that is a benefit to those who choose to use it.,but rather to
highlight the lack of awareness on the part of the general public. I can
assure you that I am not aware of any entity that is better at data
collecting than Wal-Mart so the results of this survey should be given
some attention.

I have a foot in both camps to some extent, being a volunteer at many
levels and also being in the education "business" ,making my living as
a consultant. My personal observation has been that the literacy field
is very insular and almost incestuous...frequently the same players
changing hats but not many "new" folks in decision making slots.
Wal-Mart's entry here may yield some fresh information. I thought the
NIFL publicity campaign several years back was a huge failure and this
survey seems to support that. In my community for example, NIFL failed
to list the number one TV and the number one radio stations as media
contacts !

Also, I don't think the general public is interested in the minutia of
grade levels or NALS levels ...different messages for different
audiences.... They need to hear compelling messages of why Literacy is
important to not only those who lack it, but all of us impacted by it.

At any rate, I don't care to debate the efficacy of the hotline
itself.... I'm interested in the survey results and what they mean to
the field.

Robert, thank you so much for that article! I called them about all our
Literacy programs here in our county, which are ready to go, fully
equipped, needing only the students. We were not in their data base
so we were added. They are a referral service as well and will begin to
send students our way!
