I worked at a Boston middle school as a consultant--did every errand that no
one else was doing. The reason I'm not working there now is that my job was
soft-funded, and the funds were cut. I was degreed and credentialed, so
eventually landed on my feet.
The principal of that school was heroic--a hero. He didn't have enough
money. He needed after school sports prgrams, smaller classes, ways to get the
parents to school for meetings, most parents didn't have cars. Teachers
bought school supplies from their own salaries, cooked and brought food for
parents' night. The school also needed lots better special ed training and student
assignments, as well as social or family workers. moneymoneymoney A lot of
education is crowd control. Front doors locked against strangers, gang
members. I did the paper work for disciplinary hearings--fights, knives
sometimes.
Biggest problem which money could solve = class size. Also better teachers
all around, seniority a problem.
