[AAACE-NLA] News from the States

Missouri maintained level state funding for adult education again this year.
The overall state budget was in a little better shape than last year, but
few programs received increases.

We are having an interesting year with the incumbent Democratic governor
facing primary opposition. We continue to alert adult educators as to the
progress of legislation and appropriations. The educators then work with
their local contacts to ensure that legislators are aware of the impact of
adult education in their districts.

I live in the 3rd Congressional District (Dick Gephardt). Since he is
retiring this year, we have eight Democrats and 2 Republicans in the primary
(August 3). I have been involved in one of the primary campaigns, but, win
or lose, I will certainly share ideas with the surviving candidates next
month. It is exciting to be in a district without an incumbent; a very
unusual opportunity.
