Dear George,

I am only bringing up attribution because in the final analysis reputation,
one's name, is all one has. By reputation, I mean the regard of one's
colleagues, friends, family, employers, all those whose support is essential. The
nifl lists are in a way public, though most of the public doesn't know about
them, they are government sponsored.

I agree that the list servs are an education, and I bless those who have
replied to my endless questions and have read and commented on what I have
written. I may in the future ask their permission to quote or paraphrase what
they have said, for my own work for the foundation that employs me; if they
want to have their names attached that will be up to them.

I have twice been damaged, once professionally, the second time personally,
over issues of reputation that only tangentially concerned me. For
my sake and others whose work you are using, I hope that you are being very
careful about the use of names, and the context of words, thoughts, ideas.
In the social sciences there are usually built in protections to guard
against potential harm.

I don't like to bring this up, believe me, especially since I regard the
lists as such a treasure, as you do, also. I know you are an historian by
training and the use of documents is somewhat different in your field.

Yours in scholarship,

Andrea
