Tom,
This is off the top of my head, but since this is Saturday morning my head is
fairly relaxed and happy, a mug of hot coffee helps. As I see it, the
common denominators are money and teaching skill. We need to disseminate
teaching knowledge, that should be a priority. The other item, money, is
supplied by the feds, the state, local communities, businesses, foundations,
community colleges--others? Obviously there isn't enough. David Rosen has
suggested (I think) that each state should put together a network--link them up--of
adult literacy programs. If this were done it would help with disseminating
teaching knowledge and figuring out how much more money is needed and how to get
it. Simple-minded but not simple to do. Got to start with some simple
ideas, maybe. Do states already do this? Community colleges, maybe?
