Book purchasing may be down across America accorrding to the article; however, at public libraries in my neighboring communities circulation numbers are up. At the library where I'm employed the circulation numbers for past fiscal year are up over the previous year which was up over the year prior to that. I'd be interested to find out if this is true across other states/communities.
Books are increasingly more expensive to buy even with the discounts offered. I'd rather wait to read (if it's a popular read) a book I've checked out than pay $22.95 for a book I might or might not enjoy. Public libraries allow me to do that!
