  This is an important consideration.  A lot of the impact among those students at a pre-GED level is subtle, often elusive, and sometimes related to these areas as you mention.

   

  I'm compiling a report on about what about 20 students in our program learned last year, including the utilizations of literacy in the external environment.  I hope to place the document on a web site, which if I'm successful, I will provide the link.  For starters here's the questionnaire that some of the students filled out on their own while others did so with the assistance of their tutors.

  If the parents are poor, their children may not have necessary access to medical care, nutrition, vision, hearing,and dental care.  All these correlate with school success.  Literacy is a gateway to a higher economic level.  Where possible, adult literacy programs should incorporate links to these resources for the parents so they can help their children.
