Colleagues,
There is a wonderful article in today's (June 22, 2004) NYTimes about Mexican
women "cocineras" cooking for Mexican men, immigrants, without families, in
New York state suburbs. The women have turned their cooking skills into a
business, the men buy the food and the women then come in and do the cooking.
No mention of adult literacy, but....it seems a potentially great model for
female adult literacy classes--start your own business using your own skills.
"'Cooking for 12 to 15 men who continually come and go takes planning,' said
Lina Pereyda-Ramirez, who came from Mexico 20 months ago. Each week, Ms.
Pereyda-Ramirez plans menus for each of the four homes where she works, telling
the men what supplies they need to buy at Sam's Club."
Are there any literacy classes that incorporate business models,
entrepreneurship, into teaching and learning? In my view this is a great use of
female skills.
Andrea
