Andres,

If a light is switched in Sri Lanka and in my home, and nothing happens, the same non-event causes this: no electricity.

The Sri Lankan villager lives closer to the ground than I do and the village land is among the most fertile in the world. Good rain fall, too.

I live an oil dependent life, you do, too. We are both surrounded by oil based products.

There was an article last week in the NYTimes about a Mexican couple and their daughter who had moved to Las Vegas from California, for a better life. In the desert? How long will this better life last? Climate change? Water table?

Postmodernism is conceptually incoherent because it falls apart in the face of the pan-universal need for energy sources. It ignores this very basic fact of life. It does not take account of a major piece of reality. I am suggesting that if we want a long term vision for adult literacy we had better figure out ways of taking this large piece of reality into account.

A call-in show recently featured Tom Friedman talking about India and globalization. We are all in the same boat on this one.

Andrea
