You have just described why the idea of post-modernism is conceptually incoherent. Maybe i should back pedal and say that the idea of modernism is conceptually incoherent, but there is a divide between human labor and machine labor so I won't do that. 

The machine guarantees nothing. It does more work than people can, that's it, it does need supplies of energy. Grand narratives are fictions, stories.  What people do with the surplus labor is determined by what they value, sometimes values compete.  

What is the role of adult literacy in all this?  In our future?
