Dear George,
Thanks for your reply. I went to the URL you suggested and then to a couple of books on development/modernization.
As I see it, the core of modernization is the movement from agriculture as the basis of an economy to industrialization. Industrializtion requires new energy sources (coal, oil, nuclear, etc) and energy converters--machines.
That's where China and soon India are going now.
Given that oil is a finite resource, as far as we know (not sure how much natural gas there is) all industrial countries are in hock to a limited future.
So--what is the relation, if any, of adult literacy to population survival? That it seems is a crucial question for the field to get a hold of and answer.
I'd be very interested in anyone's answer to this question.
(I toss the idea of post-modernism out the window as conceptually incoherent.)
