Hah! I know you have a low opinion of academics, BUT you have just given me a primo example of how a student reaches an optimal level of performance. Thank you!
The point is, the student couldn't do it unless the ability were already there. If you think of functional as the first test, what the student does without intervention, it seems to be much lower than the optimal level, optimal level could be called the "social support" level. Optimal level is below the scaffolded level, the teaching level that we all use to help the student along, to learn.
There is more written about this, but it keys into a person's skill development. I didn't think of it as anxiety reduction, but maybe that's an explanation. Thanks.
