That's true, that it is a state function and since they've done such a wonderful job we should let them continue.  not.  Sorry but......an almost 50% public school dropout rate is not in the best interest of our society.  Add to that competency scare the fact that over 40% of those who do complete a diploma HS can't pass the GED?  Add to that: according to the statistics I've seen, close to 90% of our prison inmates could be termed illiterate?  And the same holds true for those on welfare?  All of which suck up my taxes?  We've known the problem for some time now, why ain't it fixed ?  At the state level?  All I see is a continuing argument that those folks should be left to 'make the decision to be illiterate' and let those who 'want it' go get it.   Without taxes.  And probably without fire protection, and police protection.  whoooooeeeee
Who is it that doesn't see the big picture here?

  The Constitution does not provide for the federal government's meddling in education.  It is strictly a state issue; big government is the problem not the solution.
