I am delighted to be writing what I hope will be the first of many
National Coalition for Literacy organizational updates. On February
11-12, 2004 the NCL board and membership convened in Washington, D.C.
for our second meeting as a newly incorporated, not-for-profit (501-c-3)
organization.
During the half-day board meeting, the board developed a six month
activity plan to guide organizational development through August 31,
2004. To facilitate this process, the four member executive committee
will participate in a full day strategic planning session in April 2004.
The outcomes of this session will be shared first with the board and
then with the full membership.
On February 12, 2004, NCL members, representatives from OVAE and NIFL,
and guests from the field and the press participated in the full day
meeting. The Public Policy Committee, the Research Committee, and the
newly established Education and Outreach Committee met to discuss major
issues and develop action plans. As always, networking was a key part of
the meeting.
Finally, a few key points.
1. NCL has a new domain name: www.national-coalition-literacy.org
. Be sure and bookmark it. In the next few months, we will be updating
membership and organizational information and adding new content. Our
sincere thanks to ProLiteracy Worldwide for continuing to host the
website and provide technical support.
2. Upcoming NCL eetings in Washington, D.C. at the Hall of States,
444 North Capitol. Mark your calendars. More information will follow.
a. Thursday, May 13, 2004
b. Thursday, September 9, 2004
3. On a much sadder note, our colleague and friend, Marlyn McAdams
passed away in January. A memorial service will be held on Monday,
February 23, 2004, in the Russell Senate Office Building Caucus Room
from 5-7 pm. Please RSVP to rsvpmarlyn at aol.com.
I also hope that you will pass this information along to your lists and
groups. I will make every effort to keep you posted on NCL activities.
In the meantime, feel free to contact me at dlipschu at ala.org. Thanks for

Sincerely,
