George, Anne--first, thanks to both for your interesting and informative emails.

Two points:

1) George, could you rexplain your last paragraph? I don't quite get it.

2) Anne--recent research indicates that the first known alphabet writing was on a rock wall in Egypt, about 1800 years ago. Alphabet = sound/symbol. The symbols used were taken from Egyptian hieroglyphs, the sounds represented belong to a Semitic language. We still use the A,for example, which is alpha or aleph, and Egyptian in origin.

You heard it here first! Actually, books will have to be rewritten. The alphabet was invented only once.

Andrea
